Amazon boxes have really made a name for themselves in the world of streaming TV, thanks to their elegant design and user friendly interface.
You can almost say the Fire TV is the “iPhone” of streaming boxes. Their latest model continues to improve on this design.
A Great Mid-Range Box
This 3rd Generation version of the Amazon Fire TV is a sleek upgrade to the classic Firestick model. Many of the specs are the same between them, such as Amazon’s user-friendly navigation system, and both support the same streaming services (such as Netflix, HBO, and Kodi)
However, Fire TV costs about twice as much as the Firestick.
Primarily because it supports cutting-edge 4k HD and HDR streaming. Content providers are quickly expanding the amount of programming available in 4k, so this might be a good time to jump on that train. Fire TV is also significantly faster than the Firestick, thanks to it’s more powerful processors. Think of this as the Firestick’s big brother.
It’s worth noting that there are higher-end boxes such as the Nvidia Shield that are more powerful and can do more, but they are definitely more expensive. So, if you are looking for top-shelf picture quality, this device is a convenient, affordable option.
The Amazon Fire TV’s interface is well designed and easy to use. You should have no problem finding all your apps and programs searching from the main screen, for the most part.
However, sometimes content from third-party apps doesn’t show up on the main screen search. This means that you have to do into the individual apps to find them, which can be a hassle.
Fire TV Cons
Unfortunately the Fire TV does not have a built in Ethernet jack, which is disappointing. You usually get better performance with an Ethernet, but as long as your WiFi signal is pretty strong, you shouldn’t be worried.
We also were skeptical of the fact it doesn’t have an audio jack, but overall that’s not such a huge deal.
Portable And Convenient
The Fire TV comes as a dongle that attaches to your system via USB, and it’s fairly small, so it won’t clutter up your entertainment center space.
The Fire TV comes with a remote that is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa voice command. It usually works fine, but there are some instances where it may have trouble understanding you.
All in all, this iteration of the Fire TV packs a lot of power into a little dongle. If you are looking for a fast, user-friendly device to stream 4k HD shows and movies, this might be the option you’ve been looking for.
Now that you’ve purchased your Fire TV, you may be wondering how to get the most use out of it. We highly recommend the streaming platform Kodi. This free, open-source program allows you to stream practically any type of content imaginable through a number of third-party “add-ons”. Check out our installation guide here.
If you are interested in fully exploring the capabilities of your internet TV box, you might consider getting a jailbroken version, with popular programs, such and Kodi and Mobdro already installed.
